All of the things you mentioned are definitely important, but there is nothing that can teach someone the concepts of programming and creating vibe besides pure experience. In many ways, for 2 years after getting serato, I think I became a less perceptive DJ. I became too into what I was doing and not enough about the vibe on the dancefloor. Being able to connect with those people and guide them through a journey throughout the night is the most difficult skill to learn, and most people don’t have the patience or perceptiveness to master it. This is the reason that 8 years later, I am still learning.
Very well said. Being able to engage your audience is the key. To do this you have to keep an open mind to be able to gauge and more importantly, deliver what your audience wants. I’ve been been djing for over 20 years now and hind sight being 20/20 It’s not that learning this skill is difficult. For me, it all came together once I was willing to change my approach. But like you said ” most people don’t have the patience or perceptiveness to master it.”
